26 st / October 2015 www.sea-technology.com were reported with magnitude of Ms >= 7.5, including those occurring on June 3 and 18, 1932 in Jalisco with Ms = 8.2 and 7.8, respectively, and having maximum tsunami run-up height of 3 m, causing 400 casualties. The recurrence time estimated for earthquakes similar to the 1932 event on the coast of Jalisco is 77 years. Considering that the earthquake of 1995 was generated with the rupture of only the southern half of the rupture area in 1932, the likelihood of an event occurring similar to 1995 is very high in the northern coast of Jalisco. This means an area of high potential seismic haz- ard, also known as the Vallarta Gap, which includes Bahia de Banderas, where the tourist city of Puerto Vallarta is lo- cated. TSUJAL, an acronym from the words TSUnami and JALis- co, is a collaborative research project to study the relation- ship between superfcial and depth structures associated with earthquake events and processes involved. Participants are: the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM) and the Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM) from CSIC and the Universidad Complutense of Madrid (UCM) in Spain; and the Universi- dad de Guadalajara (UDG), Centro de Inves- tigaciones Científcas y Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico. UNAM provided the research ves- sel El Puma. The overall objective of the TSUJAL cruise is the characterization of the surface and deep structure of the Rivera Plate and the Jalisco Block to study the recent tectonic de- formation caused by the subduction and the extensional zones associated with transform faults. To study these processes, a multidisci- plinary geophysical approach, mainly seis- mic and bathymetric, is necessary to char- acterize structures from the seafoor to the internal crust where the subducting litho- sphere slab and seismicity occur. Under- standing the lateral and vertical extension of the plate boundaries will shed light on sub- ducting tectonic plate confguration and the sequence of events on the western margin of Mexico. A network of portable seismic stations were set up along the coast with marine air- gun shots to link the marine crustal and up- per mantle features with onshore structures. The integration of these geophysical param- eters along with the geological information available will allow a complete picture of the lithosphere for an evaluation of seismic and tsunami risk. OFEG: European Marine Alliance The TSUJAL project was originally sched- uled to use the Spanish RV Sarmiento de Gamboa, which was 6,000 naut. mi. from the work site. It was rescheduled to use the English ship RSS James Cook instead, already conveniently located in the Caribbean Sea. The data gathering was successfully ac- complished between February 17 and March 19, 2014, led by Dr. Rafael Bartolome (CSIC) under a barter agreement between NERC and CSIC. This project was conducted under the auspices of OFEG, a forum of Europe's leading oceanographic research organi- zations for a global- and ocean-class research feet aiming to maximize overall scientifc output using state-of-the-art marine facilities in support of the European oceanographic community. The main aim of OFEG is to reduce the operat- ing costs of marine vessels, maintaining or even improving the quality of scientifc work in ocean matters, giving sci- entists the opportunity to use the most appropriate and ad- vanced oceanographic research equipment. The use of large offshore installations requires a fuid exchange of informa- tion on scenarios and geographical areas of work among members, who meet twice a year to plan future exchanges. These include joint cruises, exchange of existing instrumen- tation and ship time, and exchange of engineers and tech- nicians. No money changes hands, and the arrangements do not provide extra "free" ship time for any country/insti- tution. For every cruise on another organization's ship, the Multichannel seismic profles TS01 to TS14 acquired during TSUJAL survey (positions are based on the center of source location during MCS shooting).
