www.sea-technology.com October 2015 / st 59 New ROV Training To Improve Careers A new model for increasing work- force competency in the ROV indus- try, using a realistic offshore instruc- tion environment, has been unveiled by The Underwater Centre. Industry and training providers have collabo- rated to develop work-class ROV op- erations training that gives personnel thorough preparation and experience in essential aspects of work-class ROV practice, offering the building blocks to improve safety and eff- ciency of staff and agency personnel. The aim of the industry-led solution is to address the looming skills and personnel shortage by offering both basic and advanced training to a greater number of workers, conse- quently shortening the time to reach senior roles. It represents a complete change in the approach to training and, consequently, the opportuni- ties open to personnel development within the industry in the future. The Chief Executive of the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) Andy Samuel has called on the sector to continue in- vesting in the next generation of tal- ent or risk a "crippling skills gap" in the wake of the global drop in the oil price. Second Failure Module for Improved DP Understanding Braemar Engineering's new Sec- ond Failure Module dynamic po- sitioning (DP) software has been installed on a client's vessel. Now undergoing beta testing, the Second Failure Module is a unique software tool developed by Braemar Engineer- ing that allows a more in-depth un- derstanding of the DP system. Upon a single failure, the software will al- low the crew to quickly identify how vulnerable their DP equipment is to a second failure, allowing a higher degree of certainty to the individual faced with making the costly deci- sion of abandoning operations. The software is also helpful for planning prolonged DP operations, where crit- ical preventive maintenance requires a piece of equipment to be down for a period of time. The Second Failure Module acts as a highly valuable training tool, enabling DP and en- gineering staff to study the frst and second failure effects on their equip- ment and learn how best to mitigate those risks. Energy Effciency Award For Norsepower Norsepower won the Energy Eff- ciency Solution award at the annual Ship Effciency Awards, organized by Fathom Maritime Intelligence and hosted by LR. The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor, a spinning cyl- inder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship.
