50 st / July 2017 Scotrenewables Reaches Full-Rated Power at EMEC The world's most powerful tidal turbine, developed and manufactured by Scottish engineering company Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd., has reached full-rated power at the Euro- pean Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland. After undergoing grid-connected commissioning works prior to Christ- mas last year, the SR2000 was recon- nected to its subsea cable in a low-cost connection operation that took under an hour. All offshore operations have been delivered with small crew transfer ves- sels or locally based workboats. Following energization, the 500-tonne floating tidal turbine com- menced generation and power export to the local Orkney grid. Since then the turbine has been undergoing a phased testing program leading to the achieve- ment of a full 2-MW-rated export ca- pacity. This deployment is already feeding into design optimizations that are being made under the company's commercialization project, FloTEC, which will see an even lower-cost SR2000 model rolled out as a com- mercial offering in 2018. BOURBON Chosen for Wind Turbine Mooring Installation BOURBON has been awarded a contract for the mooring installation of the first floating wind turbine in France at the experimental test site of SEM-REV managed by Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN), in the context of the European project FLOATGEN. The mooring installation will take place summer 2017 based on a meth- od jointly established by BOURBON and Ideol's engineering teams in col- laboration with the Ecole Centrale de Nantes. The wind turbine will be installed near Le Croisic, France, by the end of the year. BOURBON's Subsea Services team will be responsible for the project management, mooring installation and engineering. An anchor handling tug supply vessel and ROVs will be used for the pre-tensioning of the mooring system. Two Projects to Develop Monitoring Tech for Tidal Industry and academic researchers will join forces to collaborate on two projects developing new environmen- tal monitoring technologies for tidal energy applications. The projects were selected for funding through a joint re- search competition sponsored by the Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia (OERA), the Nova Sco- tia Department of Energy and INNO- VACORP. The project winners are Open Seas Instrumentation Inc. (OSI) and JASCO Applied Sciences. Each project intro- duces an innovative approach to moni- toring marine life near a tidal turbine. The research results will lead to greater understanding of the complex relation- ships between tidal energy develop- ment and the biological and physical ocean environment. The Open Seas project focuses on the redesign of a subsea platform for monitoring movement and behavior marine renewables Tough Subsea Work Demands Precision Equipment! Whether it's a diver or an ROV… cutting wire ropes, cables, or pipes demands precision equipment that can get the job done safely and quickly. Aqua-Tech specializes in highly customized subsea tools that get any job done better, faster, cheaper and safer. We also keep a huge inventory of off-the- shelf tools that can be shipped immediately to anywhere in the world. This multi-configurable, ROV-friendly saw operates at a low RPM but with the same high torque as other saws. The end result is a fast, efficient cut with less wear on the blade.
