ACLS Certification Now Open To Applications The Association of Canada Lands Surveyors (ACLS) has developed a certification model for hydrographers and off- shore surveyors that was officially recognized by the IHO/ FIG/ICA International Board of Standards and Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) in April 2016 and is now ready to receive applica- tions. The ACLS scheme is designed to promote IBSC-Accred- ited Category A or B training in Canada, while standardiz- ing knowledge and experience requirements for individuals possessing nonaccredited hydrographic surveying training and experience. The ACLS Program has two levels of certification and is open to both ACLS-commissioned and noncommissioned hydrographic and offshore surveyors in Canada and abroad. AWO Approves Sabine Surveyors as Auditor Sabine Surveyors Ltd. has been approved by the Ameri- can Waterways Operators (AWO) to carry out audits as part of AWO's Responsible Carrier Program (RCP), a safety man- agement system for tugboat, towboat and barge companies that requires AWO member companies to undergo periodic management and vessel audits conducted by an indepen- dent third party. AWO's RCP has been accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard as an existing safety management system that meets Sub- chapter M requirements. New Ministerial Declaration On Port State Control Global leaders in marine shipping signed a new declara- tion that will protect the oceans and advance international ship safety at the third Joint Ministerial Conference on Port State Control in Vancouver, Canada. The conference in May brought together ministers and heads of delegation from Canada, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The new Ministerial Declaration on Port State Control is a commitment by European and Pacific Rim countries to continue to eliminate substandard shipping practices that result in loss of life, damage to property and harm to marine environments. Kongsberg Obtains Sole Rights For Two Gliders Kongsberg Underwater Technology Inc. has completed negotiations with CoMotion, the University of Washington's collaborative innovation hub, to obtain the sole rights to produce, market and continue development of two new un- derwater glider systems. Both new glider systems are based in part on the original Seaglider design. The first vehicle, Deepglider, is designed for operation to a maximum depth of 6,000 m. The second vehicle, Oculus, is specifically designed for shallow-water operation. Devel- opment of these glider systems was supported by federal grants. ST 31 years!
