ST Conference Preview US Hydro 2013 T he Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA) will host the U.S. Hydro 2013 event at the New Orleans Sheraton in New Orleans, Louisiana, from March 25 to 28. U.S. Hydro 2013 will feature hydrographic workshops focused on preparing hydrographers for certifcation from the National Society of Professional Surveyors-American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (NSPSACSM), along with company-based training from hydrographic software and equipment manufacturers. The hydrographic faculty from the University of Southern Mississippi will be presenting sessions on geodesy, vertical datums, positioning and uncertainty. Additional sessions on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and International Hydrographic Organization standards and sonar theory will also be available. The workshop program, overseen by John Mraz of USACE���s New York District, will begin on March 25 and run through March 27. THSOA, a nonproft organization, has strived to make this event affordable for its membership, in contrast a trend of hydrographic conferences hosted by for-proft agencies. Conference Events This year���s opening ceremony will feature the frst class of inductees in THSOA���s Hydrographer Hall of Fame, which was recently created to honor hydrographers who have made signifcant contributions to hydrographic science and equipment, and to THSOA. Nominees are now under consideration by the Hall of Fame committee, chaired by Chic Ransone, president of International Industries Inc. (Annapolis, Maryland). In addition to the Hall of Fame induction, the opening ceremony will feature three keynote speakers: Col. Edward R. Fleming, commander of the New Orleans District USACE; RAdm. Gerd Glang, U.S. national hydrographer; and RAdm. Brian B. Brown, commander of the U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. During U.S. Hydro 2013, the NSPS-ACSM hydrographer certifcation test will be given. Interested hydrographers should register immediately to be eligible to take the test. Finally, THSOA���s annual general meeting will be held on March 28 at 1:30 p.m. Technical Program The U.S. Hydro 2013 technical program, running from March 26 to 28, will present more than 50 papers focusing on the latest trends and technology in hydrographic surveying. In addition to the technical papers, a poster session will feature hydrographic work by researchers and university students. Al Rougeau of C&C; Technologies (Lafayette, Louisiana) is the technical session chairman for U.S. Hydro 2013, and Paul Cooper of CARIS (Fredericton, Canada) has been managing the poster session. Exhibition Featuring 60 booths, the U.S. Hydro 2013 exhibition will start after the opening ceremony and conclude on March 28 at noon.
