www.sea-technology.com October 2017 / st 43 DEGO IV Software Models Vessel Control Strategy for Ferry A significantly upgraded vessel control software package from ABB is delivering the measurable operational efficien- cy gains promised to Stena Line for the freight ferry Stena Scotia within a month of commissioning. The DEGO IV ad- vanced speed governor and actuation system on board has been enhanced so that control over the vessel's propulsion system minimizes roll and rudder movements, delivering a new way of saving fuel while also improving crew comfort. The Stena Scotia is deployed in daily Ro-Ro services be- tween Rotterdam and Killingholme in the U.K. NAPA Updates Systems To Aid EU MRV Compliance NAPA has updated its performance monitoring and re- porting systems to enable simple, straightforward compli- ance with EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) legislation. From January 1, 2018, vessels larger than 5,000 GT call- ing at any EU and EFTA (Norway and Iceland) port must monitor, report and verify their CO 2 emissions. The data must be collected on a voyage-by-voyage basis and submit- ted to the EU electronically via the EMSA portal on either an annual or voyage basis. Companies had to present a plan for compliance with this legislation by August 31, 2017, which must contain the method of collecting the monitoring data. To support customers in achieving compliance easily, NAPA software includes reporting features for EU MRV across its portfolio of performance monitoring systems. Us- ers of NAPA Shipping Solutions, ClassNK-NAPA GREEN and NAPA-DSME Power can generate automatically created annual or voyage-by-voyage MRV reports and export them as CSV files. ROVs, Sonar Part of Toolbox In New York Water Ops New York State is richly endowed with freshwater lakes, ponds and reservoirs, as well as portions of two Great Lakes and thousands of miles of rivers and streams. These inland bodies of water serve as drinking water, provide flood con- trol to protect life and property, and support recreation, tourism, agriculture, fishing, power generation and manu- facturing. They also provide habitats for aquatic plant and animal life. The New York City Department of Environmental Protec- tion (DEP) supplys clean drinking water, collects and treats wastewater, and reduces air, noise and hazardous materi- als pollution. JW Fishers supplies the agency with the tools needed to successfully examine local waterways, such as the SeaLion-2 ROV, which is small enough to fit inside a larger pipeline and strong enough to withstand currents of up to 3 kt. in open water. DEP also owns a JW Fishers side scan sonar for searches and inspections. The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office Underwater Search and Recovery Team is a public safety dive team that also uses a SeaLion-2, with a manipulator arm and SCAN-650 sector-scanning sonar.
