42 st / October 2017 www.sea-technology.com Chamber of Shipping Wants Better MSP Integration Canada's announcement of temporary measures on ship- ping to address one of many anthropogenic risks to North Atlantic Right Whales highlights the need for formal inte- grated marine spatial planning (MSP) to better manage hu- man activity such as marine transportation, according to The Chamber of Shipping. At 1.8 percent of the Canadian economy, ships move more than $200 billion worth of goods to and from global markets. While Canada is making progress on enhancing its marine protection, it has not adequately progressed inte- grated planning in coastal areas of high usage, the industry group argues. Adopting integrated MSP would not only bet- ter anticipate changing environmental conditions, but also ensure that Canada's regulatory and transportation frame- work could adapt to meet changing circumstances and avoid actions that make Canada's supply chain less com- petitive in a global marketplace. Huon Aquaculture Buys Second Falcon Vehicle The largest majority privately owned producer of fresh salmon in Australia, Huon Aquaculture, has ordered a sec- ond Saab Seaeye Falcon vehicle, with Saab Seaeye's iCON behavior-based intelligent control architecture, which makes possible the option of intelligent station-keeping and precise positioning that helps reduce operator workload. The Falcons are for inspecting the nets, rigging and moor- ings in the aquaculture pens. Damen Offers Free Dredge Job Calculator Damen has introduced an online dredge job calculator to help contractors at www.dredgefinder.com. For every dredging job, the local government concerned will present a public tender. In submitting their offers, con- tractors must calculate the estimated production of each dif- ferent job site. It is imperative that these calculations are accurate as it is the production that defines what dredging equipment is required. Damen's new dredging calculation tool assists contrac- tors with what is typically a long process. With just a few mouse clicks on the straightforward online platform, known as Sandy, the contractor enters the defining characteristics of the dredging job at hand. The result not only provides detailed advice on which cutter suction dredger should be mobilized, but also includes which options are complemen- tary to the specific project (e.g., carriages, booster stations and anchor booms). Montrose Port Authority Moves Into Offshore Renewables Montrose Port Authority has supported its first project within the offshore renewables sector. In association with NorSea Group (UK) Ltd., the port is participating in the pio- neering Hywind Scotland offshore wind project. The four-week campaign consisted of five port calls for the anchor handling tug supply vessel Normand Prosper. Chain and mooring equipment were loaded onto the ves- sel, then the mooring systems designed to support Statoil's floating wind farm project in the North Sea were delivered. The components of the project were assembled at Nor- Sea's Group Base in Stord, Norway, before being shipped to the offshore project, while the mooring systems for the five wind turbines were stored in Montrose Port. Canada Opens Atlantic Fisheries Fund to Proposals Fisheries and Oceans Canada and its provincial partners in Atlantic Canada announced that the more than $400 mil- lion Atlantic Fisheries Fund (AFF) is now open for business and accepting proposals. The AFF will focus on growing opportunities and increasing market value for sustainably sourced, high-quality fish and seafood products from Atlan- tic Canada. Investments flowing from the fund will position the fish and seafood sector in Atlantic Canada for long-term sustainable growth and will support continued industry ef- forts to provide consumers with high-quality, sustainably sourced Canadian fish and seafood products. The AFF is now accepting applications from proponents in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. The commercial fisheries and aquaculture industry, indigenous groups, universities and academia and industry associations and organizations may apply. USAID, Inmarsat Partner On Sustainable Fishing In SE Asia The U.S. Agency for International Development's Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) and Inmarsat Global Ltd. have partnered to help commercial fishing crews promote sustainable fishing in Southeast Asia. By making use of enhanced communication technology, the partner- ship will advance catch documentation and traceability (CDT) to promote legal, reported and regulated fishing. USAID Oceans will leverage Inmarsat's expertise to improve communications for fishing vessels in the region. Crewmembers on medium and large vessels will integrate existing monitoring systems and CDT data with Inmarsat's Fleet One and IsatData Pro technology, a global two-way messaging service for tracking and monitoring ports and vessels. USAID Oceans will pilot this technology in Bitung, Indonesia, and Songkhla, Thailand, where the project has undertaken CDT system development and testing. Suc- cessful pilot tests demonstrating effective communications between vessels and ports will enable further CDT system development in the region. EVOLVE Program Trains Next-Gen Oil, Gas Professionals The Society of Exploration Geophysicists' (SEG) EVOLVE program is a transformational learning experience for stu- dents and early-career professionals. Part of a strategic collaboration between Halliburton and the SEG Founda- tion since 2014, this program offers a direct experience in conducting multidiscipline subsurface integration projects using actual seismic, geological and wellbore data. Proj- ect management, teamwork skills and business values are honed within the context of exploration, reservoir appraisal, field development planning and production enhancement scenarios. Participants work on skills to deliver improved technical and business solutions in reduced time. ST marine resources
