international Pharos Completes Diverless Repair For Offshore Wind Farm Export Cable Pharos Offshore Group (Shotts, Scotland) has completed cable repair and burial for London Array Ltd.'s (London, England) offshore wind farm on a section of damaged sub- sea export cable, Pharos announced in August. Pharos delivered a work package with the mobilization of engineering, fabrication and operational teams to locate, recover, re-lay and rebury the power cable off the Kent coast. The 800-square-millimeter high-voltage DC export cable has a 218-millimeter diameter and weighs more than 50 kilograms per meter in water. Pharos used a DP-2 vessel to reroute the cable from its original route to an area with planned cable corridors. Tools for properly handling the large stiff cable did not exist in the market, and standard grapnel operations were not possible due to nearby cable routes. The team also converted a con- ventional telecoms cable ship to accommodate the loading, storage, lay, splicing and safe handling of the product. Aker Arctic to Design the First Chinese Polar Research Icebreaker China plans to construct its first icebreaking research vessel, which will be conceptualized and designed by Aker Arctic Technology Inc. (Helsinki, Finland) under a more than €5 million contract awarded in August by the country's State Oceanic Administration. The design time is expected to take seven months and then be provided to a design company or yard, which will create the vessel's detailed design and workshop drawings. The polar research icebreaker will be designed to break through 1.5 meters of level ice, including multiyear ice, at 2 to 3 knots. As a polar class 3 vessel, it will be able to operate year-round in second-year ice. The vessel will be fitted with twin azimuthing propeller drives. It will be 120 meters long and a maximum of 22.3 meters wide, with a draught of 8.5 meters, and will be able to accommodate 90 people. The vessel's marine geological and geophysical capabili- ties will enable seasonal polar marine geology, marine grav- ity, magnetic and seismic surveys. For marine biological and ecological programs, the vessel will enable marine organ- ism and ecological surveys and act as a biological research platform. Werum DSHIP to be Installed On German Research Vessel The new German deep-sea RV Sonne will be equipped with Werum Software & Systems AG's (Lüneburg, Germany) DSHIP data management system, Werum said in August. The vessel's IT system is laid out for 40 scientists working on board. DSHIP will acquire, process, visualize and archive data on board the vessel, as well as store the data in a dedi- cated onshore archive system. DSHIP will be complemented by an e-mail management system that will prioritize e-mails for transfer and define size limits for each account. Installation and start-up of the IT system will be carried out at Neptune Werft's (Rostock, Germany) shipyard in War- nemuende, Germany.
