www.sea-technology.com November 2016 / st 49 Condition Based Maintenance System for LCS Ships Mikros Systems Corp. received a multiyear contract from the U.S. Navy for production, logistics support and future development of its ADSSS (ADEPT Distance Support Sensor Suite) Condition Based Maintenance system for the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program. The contract covers the first eight ships of the 28-ship program. LCS-13 Launches in Menominee River The Lockheed Martin-led industry team launched the 13th U.S. littoral combat ship (LCS) into the Menominee River in Wisconsin at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine ship- yard in September. LCS-13, the future USS Wichita, will un- dergo additional outfitting and testing at the yard before delivery next year. NATO RV Alliance Participates In Olives Noires 2016 In September, the NATO RV Alliance, operated by the Italian Navy for the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation, took part for the first time in Olives Noires in the Mediterranean Sea. Olives Noires 2016 was a live exercise involving NATO, French, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Slovenian naval units to enhance operational readiness levels and multinational cooperation training in the littoral environment. How Fish Move Inspires Underwater Vehicle, Robot Motion Researchers at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) are mim- icking how fish swim and move their fins to increase maneu- verability and enhance the motion of underwater vehicles and robotic systems. The researchers received a $258,008 grant from the U.S. Office of Naval Research for instrumentation to enable 3D observation of underwater flow dynamics. The Volumetric Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) System, which resembles a high-tech laser camera, will help the re- searchers measure and better understand how fluid dynamics interact with bio-inspired flexible propulsors in complex un- derwater environments. This system also will perform 2D PIV, stereo PIV and micro-PIV synchronized with body kinematics. LiFT Battery Systems for Dry Combat Submersible General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) signed a contract with Lockheed Martin to provide Lithi- um-ion Fault Tolerant (LiFT) battery systems for use on U.S. Special Operations Command's new Dry Combat Submers- ible (DCS), a long-endurance delivery vehicle capable of transporting divers in a dry environment. LiFT will power the DCS propulsion and internal support systems. British Navy Hosts Inaugural Unmanned Warrior Joint Exercise The first-ever Unmanned Warrior joint exercise was hosted by the British Royal Navy in October. Unmanned Warrior is part of a larger British naval exercise called Joint Warrior, which provides a semiannual opportunity for U.S., British, NATO and allied units to train together in a range of scenarios that realistically could be encountered during coalition operations. More than 40 international participants from other na- vies, industry, academia and research laboratories demon- strated the latest in autonomous and unmanned systems. The mission themes were: geospatial intelligence; anti- submarine warfare; mine countermeasures; intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance; and command and control. WASSP Wireless Systems For New Zealand Navy WASSP Ltd. delivered three rapid-deploy WASSP Wire- less systems to the Royal New Zealand Navy. Combined with wireless link technology, they allow RHIBs to be de- ployed from larger surface vessels to map seafloor topog- raphy, assimilate subsurface data and provide a rapid area assessment that is wirelessly transmitted back to the "moth- ership" in a real-time 3D animation. Refitted Minelayer Delivered To Finnish Navy The fully refitted minelayer Pansio was handed over to the Finnish Navy. The upgrade was done by ATLAS ELE- KTRONIK Finland Oy, with Uki Workboat Oy (Uuden- kaupungin Työvene Oy) as a subcontractor. All three Pansio- class minelayers—Pansio, Porkkala and Pyhäranta—will be refitted to extend their life into the 2030s.
