American Society of Civil Engineers Issues Tsunami-Safe Building Standards When the next huge tsunami strikes the western Unit- ed States, people in and around some newly built coastal structures will be more safe thanks to national construction standards that have been announced. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has developed these tsunami stan- dards, known as ASCE 7-16. The tsunami standards are only for steel-reinforced con- crete buildings in "inundation zones," which in the future may be stronger and safer with only moderate increases in cost, experts say. They will not apply to wood-frame struc- tures.
