MTS Awards Following plenary speeches by Dr. James Bellingham and Dr. Thomas Curtin, the annual Marine Technology Society awards presentation took place September 20, with several awards sponsored by Compass Publications Inc. The Compass Distinguished Achievement Award was given to Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Under Secretary of Com- merce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Admin- istrator. The Compass International Award was presented to Dr. Lian Lian of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Compass Industrial Award was given to Teledyne Marine. The Lockheed Martin award for Ocean Science and Engineering was given to Tyler Schilling of Schilling Ro- botics. Ocean News and Technology presented its Young Professional Award to Jeremy Stuhr of iXBlue. MTS also named Dr. Thomas Curtin an MTS Fellow and presented Dr. Robert Randall with the MTS Outstanding Service Award. MTS also presented the Washington, D.C. Section with the MTS Outstanding Section Award, the Dynamic Positioning Committee with the MTS Outstanding Com- mittee Award and the University of Southern Mississippi with the Outstanding Student Section Award. IEEE Awards The IEEE plenary session honored Dr. John E. Ehrenberg with the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society's Distinguished Technical Achievement Award for the invention of the du- al-beam and split-beam scientific echosounders and con- tributions to the use of miniature acoustic tags in fisheries research. Other awards included: Harumi Sugimatsu with the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding support of the Society through organization of international conferences, symposia and workshops; Dr. M.A. Atmanand with the Presidential Award for outstand- ing service to the Society as a volunteer; Frederick H. Maltz with the IEEE/OES Emeritus Award for 20 years of service as editor of the Society Newsletter; and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) with the Company Award for their consistent presence and efforts toward the goals of the Society to advance ocean research for the sci- ence and technology community.
