14 st / November 2016 www.sea-technology.com N early 2,000 people from all sectors of the marine technology industry participated in OCEANS'16 Monterey from September 19 to 22 in Monterey, Cali- fornia. This year's annual conference, co-sponsored by the Marine Technology Society and the Oceanic Engi- neering Society of IEEE, featured a record number of abstract submissions and brought together technical professionals, researchers, industry leaders, educa- tors, policy makers and students for a four-day pro- gram of technological innovations and discussion of issues pertinent to the exploration and protection of the world's ocean resources. Set against the beautiful scenery of Monterey Bay, and spread out across two host hotels, the Monterey Marriott and the Portola Hotel and Spa, OCEANS'16 featured 513 presentations of technical papers and 133 exhibitors. The conference layout provided unique opportunities for networking and discussion throughout the week at various social events, as well as the technical and educational components of the conference. Beginning with the Icebreaker reception on Mon- day, held outdoors in Monterey's Custom House Pla- za, to the Plenary and Awards ceremonies in the his- toric Golden State Theater and the Gala hosted at the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, it was a week full of fun and excitement as well as learning and advancing forward industry knowledge. Conference Sessions The conference began on Monday, September 26, with the Tutorial Sessions. Tutorials were well attend- ed and covered a variety of topics, including AUVs, free ascent/descent vehicles, and signal image and data processing. Among the technical sessions, the AUV category was the most active, requiring 13 separate sessions, highlighting the technological developments in that field and the contributions that AUVs are making for ocean science and engineering. The program also featured many special sessions with topics ranging across virtual reality, real-time quality control of data, future needs for robotics in ocean sciences, future of oceans and even XPRIZE.
