The theme of the show is: "The sea's the limit." This event is co-sponsored by the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) of the Insti- tute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The OCEANS conferences and exhibitions bring the latest ad- vances in oceanic engineering and science to an interna- tional audience of scientists, engineers and end-users, as well as policy makers and educators. What To Expect Conference General Co-chairs Bill Kirkwood and Jill Zande have led a team of volunteers to develop the show program. The formal opening of the con- ference begins early Tuesday morn- ing and includes the plenary ses- sion, which is open to all attendees and the general public. This year's featured speakers include Dr. Mar- cia McNutt, first female president, National Academy of Sciences; Jon White, president and CEO, Con- sortium for Ocean Leadership; Dr. James Bellingham, founding direc- tor, Center for Marine Robotics; and Jenifer Austin, co-founder, Google Ocean and Earth Outreach. The peer-reviewed technical pa- pers and presentations focus on the 10 core topic areas of interest to IEEE/OES and MTS members, from acoustics to vehicles. In addition to the core topics, abstracts could be submitted on topics specific to this conference: tagging devices for marine mammals; naval use of un- manned systems; next generation of ocean observing systems—polar region and mobile agile observ- ing systems; ocean energy, aqua- culture, etc. in the blue economy; advanced sensors for mine countermea- sures and munitions response; man and machine: working together with AUVs; maker's session; and interoperability. The presentations are organized in concurrent sessions from Tuesday to Thursday. The proceedings DVD will be provided to full registrants at the conference and available for sale to others. Tutorials and Workshops Taking place prior to the conference on Saturday, Sep- tember 17, is the MTS/IEEE-OES K-12 Workshop.
