46 st / May 2016 www.sea-technology.com Klein Marine Systems Ships Three Side Scan Sonar Units to Police, Fire Departments Klein Marine Systems, Inc. has shipped three System 4900 Dual-Frequency Side Scan Sonar units for the Boston Police, Quincy Police and the Cambridge Fire Department for search and recovery (SAR) missions. The Quincy Police originally purchased a Klein System 3900 in 2009 and have been utilizing the portable, dual- frequency side scan sonar for search and recovery missions. Both the System 3900 and the System 4900 operate using the Klein custom-developed SonarPro software, which combines ease of use with advanced sonar features. CTLGroup Assists in Developing World's Largest Floating Bridge The grand opening of the new SR 520 foating bridge near Seattle, the longest foating bridge in the world, took place April 2 to 3 to much fanfare. CTLGroup assisted in the devel- opment of high-performance/high-strength concretes for the bridge pontoons, provided thermal control modeling, trou- bleshooting, and plans to minimize/prevent thermal cracking of the concrete during its construction. The original SR 520 Bridge was dedicated in 1963. Con- struction for the $4.6 billion new bridge began in 2012. The new six-lane foating bridge features high-occupancy vehicle lanes, bike and walking trails and viewpoints over the lake. Panama Canal Inaugurates Scale Model Training Facility, Sets Inauguration Date The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that the Panama Canal Expansion will be offcially inaugurated on Sunday, June 26, 2016. The announcement was made dur- ing the inauguration ceremony of the Canal's state-of-the-art Scale Model Maneuvering Training Facility, which will pro- vide additional hands-on experience to pilots and tugboat captains to operate in the Expanded Panama Canal. AAL Adds Stewart World Port As Option on Pacifc Service With its inaugural sailing into Stewart World Port (SWP) this past February, AAL is set to enhance its multipurpose trade with British Columbia's most northern ice-free trading point. Opened in September 2015 and set in one of the most mineral-rich areas of North America, SWP is not only a con- venient gateway to Northwest BC and the Eastern Yukon, but with its deep-sea berthing facility and fast transit time from North Asian ports, also provides a competitive advantage for AAL's global customers. Borets Completes Successful US Applications of WR2 System Borets has successfully completed eight North American applications of its Wide Range Wear Resistant (WR2) pump system. The WR2 system is ideally suited for harsh well con- ditions and has the ability to handle a wide range of produc- tion, abrasives and gas with the goal of extending run life and minimizing well interventions. The initial North American installation was completed on May 15, 2015 in a northwest Oklahoma well designed to test the pump's ability to handle a wide range of fow, gas slugs and fow back of frac sand over an extended period of time. ABS CEO Shares Views on Leading The Maritime Industry Forward ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wi- ernicki shared his views on developing the talent needed to lead the maritime industry forward. He told attendees at the CMA Shipping 2016 Conference that the challenges impacting the industry demand new skills as well as a new way of developing leaders, and this requires organizations to change their approach. The workforce of tomorrow will need to be able to identify and embrace disruptive tech- nologies. VSTEP Supplies NAUTIS Simulators Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, Penn- sylvania, has acquired two NAUTIS Museum Simulators, offering their visitors the chance to experience historical events on the Delaware River. A professional bridge simu- lator will help show what it means to steer a ship and un- derstand what navigation involves. The NAUTIS Simulators were selected to offer an innovative and realistic solution to explore the maritime events that unfolded as the Delaware developed into a watery highway for trade and commerce. Kongsberg GlobalSim to Become Independent Kongsberg GlobalSim will become an independent busi- ness following a management buyout announced in March. The buyout will enable GlobalSim to focus on its core port crane, construction crane, military crane and other heavy equipment simulator development while KONGSBERG continues to develop its position as a leading maritime and offshore simulation provider. AAPA Celebrates Western Hemisphere Ports Day On April 5, the American Association of Port Authorities celebrated Western Hemisphere Ports Day. The association recognizes the industry's role in job creation and economic prosperity, and its commitment to education, training and environmental stewardship initiatives on behalf of the com- munities it serves across the Americas. "Ports Day is part of an ongoing commitment to high- light to policy makers and the public about the vital role ports play in moving the goods we depend on and linking us to the global economy," said Kurt Nagle, AAPA's presi- dent and CEO. Carnival Approved to Cruise from US to Cuba Starting in May Becoming the frst cruise company to be approved to sail from the U.S. to Cuba in more than 50 years, Carnival Corp. will begin travel May 1. Carnival's MV Adonia, a 704-pas- senger Fathom brand ship, will visit Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. "We are excited about Cuban approval and are ready to take travelers there on the beautiful MV Adonia," said Arnold Donald, CEO, Carnival Corp.
