Jackson, commanding offcer of Coast Guard Base Ketchikan, presented the U.S. Coast Guard Com- mandant's Proclamation declaring Ketchikan, Alaska, "A Coast Guard City" in a ceremony hosted by the Greater Ket- chikan Chamber of Commerce. As the 22nd city to become "A Coast Guard City," Ket- chikan joins Kodiak and Sitka as the third city in Alaska to be designated. Cargo Volumes On the Rise at U.S. Seaports U.S. seaports are seeing a steady rise in waterborne cargo volumes according to a newly released U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's report. Overall, 2014 freight tonnages increased 3.1 percent over 2013 totals. Based on the Corps' new report, the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) said that while volume of goods moving through U.S. ports in 2014 boosted the nation's econ- omy, it placed added burden on America's aging and def- cient freight transportation network. Exports set a record for the ffth year in a row with a year- on-year increase of 3.7 percent to 647.8 million tons. Phoenix Int'l. Returns to Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Phoenix International Holdings, Inc. has been contracted by the Commonwealth of Australia to provide deepwater towed side scan sonar services in support of continuing the underwater search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370). Phoenix and teammate Hydrospheric Solutions, Inc. (HSI) will conduct side scan sonar operations using the highly ca- pable and technologically advanced SLH PS-60 (ProSAS-60), a 6,000-m depth-rated synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) towed system. Raytheon Awarded $564 Million Contract Raytheon Co. has received a $564 million contract modi- fcation award from NASA for two satellite sensors as part of NOAA's Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Polar Follow-On missions. The frst Raytheon-built VIIRS instrument is currently fying on the NOAA/NASA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partner- ship satellite launched in 2011. The company has delivered a second VIIRS sensor for JPSS-1, scheduled for launch in 2017 and is currently building a third VIIRS unit for JPSS-2, planned for launch in 2021. VIIRS collects imagery in 22 bands of light, allowing scientists to observe emerging weather and climate patterns in unprecedented detail. NCE Awarded U.S. Navy SBIR Grant Using a small business innovation research (SBIR) grant, NCE will demonstrate the potential of active noise control (ANC) to reduce acoustic noise in Navy dive helmets by up to 15 dB. Emphasis will be placed on reducing noise caused by breathing apparatus and communication system noise. Successful execution of this project will result in wide- spread use of innovative noise quieting dive helmets for U.S. commercial and defense industries where divers are exposed to high levels of noise. ABS Launches Industries' First CyberSafety Series ABS has published guidance notes on the application of cybersecurity principles to marine and offshore operations. This cybersecurity guidance note is the frst volume in the ABS CyberSafety series, and provides best practices for cy- bersecurity as a foundational element of overall safety and security within and across the marine and offshore industries. The ABS CyberSafety series is the industries' frst risk-based management program for asset owners to apply best practice approaches to four key cyber areas: cybersecurity, automated systems safety, data management and software assurance. Crowley Celebrates More Than 7 Million Man Hours Without Injury Crowley Maritime Corp.'s tanker escort and docking ser- vices group in Valdez, Alaska, is celebrating over 7 million man hours and more than six years since logging its last Lost Time Injury (LTI). The company also announced that it had not had an OSHA recordable case in over 2 million man hours while performing tanker assist and escort work for Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. In 2015, the company logged over 1 million man hours while safely escorting 236 tankers through Prince William Sound, transporting 185 million barrels of oil. NMEA Introduces Online Marine Electronics Training for Boaters The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has introduced a new marine electronics course designed for the boating public. Called the NMEA 0400 General Overview, the new course provides highlights of NMEA's acclaimed 0400 installation standard. The course provides general knowledge and understand- ing of common marine electronics installation and operation- al procedures, regardless of equipment manufacturer. Ocean Networks Canada Celebrates 10 Years of VENUS Seafoor Observatory Ocean Networks Canada's VENUS coastal observatory in the Salish Sea celebrated 10 years of continuous operation in February. Supporting international marine science, the VENUS coastal observatory is designed to operate for 20 years as a permanent infrastructure on the seafoor. The VENUS obser- vatory has 40 km of cable with dozens of ocean sensors. Newport Beach Marina Park Earns 'Project of the Year' Awards The newly constructed Newport Beach Marina Park in California, designed in part by Moffatt & Nichol, has earned some high honors. The American Society of Civil Engineers Orange County Chapter recognized Marina Park with two "Project of the Year" awards—under the categories airports and ports and architectural engineering. The new Marina Park includes a 24,000-sq.-ft. sailing and community center and a 23-slip marina for visiting boaters. The new space offcially opened in December. ocean business
