The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernized ver- sion of the Flettner rotor—a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship. Transas, XVR Simulation Form Partnership Transas announced its new strategic cooperation with XVR Simulation to expand their maritime training capabili- ties and to deploy common complex projects in the safety and security simulation market. Emergency and crisis response training is a widely dis- cussed topic in various maritime sectors. Now, thanks to the new cooperation and the companies' combined strengths in simulation and training, customers will benefit from the ad- vanced instructor application. Korean Register Gains Authorization to Deliver Statutory Services in Germany, Togo Korean Register (KR) has been authorized as a Recog- nized Organization (RO) by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure to perform statutory services for flagged vessels. KR has also been authorized to provide similar services for flagged vessels on behalf of the government of Togo. KR is now able to conduct surveys and audits and issue certificates to the flagged ships from these two countries for SOLAS and MARPOL. Modal Training Invests in Advanced Suite Of Kongsberg Maritime Simulators Modal Training has invested in a full suite of advanced ship, offshore vessel, engine room and radar simulators from Kongsberg Maritime. Modal Training will use the equipment to support the delivery of advanced training courses for mari- time professionals and businesses. The simulators will enable Modal to offer training that ef- fectively replicates the working environment for a wide range of maritime roles, including bridge crews, navigators, mari- time engineers and Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) operators. Radio Holland Opens Offce in Abu Dhabi Radio Holland, part of the newly formed company RH Marine Group, has received its commercial trade license for Abu Dhabi after signing a contract with sponsor Royal Ruby Group (RRG). The commercial trade license allows the open- ing of a Radio Holland Middle East office in Abu Dhabi, and Radio Holland service engineers can now start to service lo- cal customers. In 2016, Radio Holland Middle East plans to increase its activities in Qatar, Kuwait and Oman as well. King Abdullah Economic City Launches Red Sea Foundation Speaking at a special event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Fahd Al Rasheed, Managing Director and CEO of King Abdullah Economic City, announced the AXIS Geospatial Takes Delivery of the LMS-Q1560 RIEGL USA announced that AXIS GeoSpatial LLC has become the latest U.S.-based commercial firm to own the LMS-Q1560 dual lidar channel airborne laser scanning system, adding to their lidar and camera system fleet. The RIEGL LMS-Q1560 was selected by AXIS for its precision and accuracy. The sensor with its rotating mirror design and high output dual laser technology will allow them to deliver higher data density with uniform point distribution. Saab Seaeye Consolidates Hydro-Lek Following their acquisition of tooling maker Hydro–Lek, Saab Seaeye is now consolidating the business into their own facilities at Fareham, England. "The decision to create a central technology hub allows us to grow and develop tool and manipulator technology and strengthen our position as a complete underwater ro- botic solutions provider," Saab Seaeye Managing Director Jon Robertson said. French Connection for IFHS The Association Francophone d'Hydrographie (AFHy) has been elected a member of the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies (IFHS), whose other member organizations include those in Australasia, Benelux, Den- mark, Germany, Italy, South Africa, South Korea and the U.K. With headquarters in Margny-lès-Compiègne near Paris, AFHy serves as a dedicated forum for exchange, promotion and discussion of wide-ranging hydrographic issues be- tween researchers, equipment manufacturers and surveyors within academic, private and public sectors of industry. ABB Technology to Help Vessels Operate Safely Below Sea Level ABB will provide the technology that will help three ves- sels safely carry out construction and maintenance tasks up to 5 km underwater. The vessels will be equipped with ABB's OCTOPUS software that uses sensors to interpret weather conditions, allowing the crew to make informed decisions during sensi- tive operations. SharpEye for New Trinidad & Tobago Coast Guard Craft Kelvin Hughes announced the successful installation of its new SharpEye upmast radar system on four new vessels commissioned by the Trinidad & Tobago Defense Force. The Damen Stan Patrol 5009 Coastal Patrol Vessels are now fit- ted with a Kelvin Hughes Advanced Surveillance System incorporating a SharpEye X-Band radar. The SharpEye radar was selected as the surveillance ra- dar due to its superior target detection capability, especially in poor weather conditions such as heavy rain and high sea states. international
