www.sea-technology.com March 2016 / st 23 O CEANS'16 MTS/IEEE Shanghai will take place April 10 to 13 at the Shanghai International Convention Cen- ter, located in Shanghai, Chi- na. The theme of the show is "Our future is with OCEANS." The frst OCEANS event to be in mainland China is co- sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and the Marine Technology Society (MTS), hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The OCEANS conferences and exhibitions focus on advances in marine technology, engineering, sci- ence, education and policy, and bring together an interna- tional audience of professionals, leaders and students within these felds. Location Shanghai, China's larg- est city, is known as a global fnancial hub. Lo- cated on China's central coast, its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront prom- enade lined with colonial- era buildings. The name Shanghai means "above ocean", and the city started as a little seaside town that is now known as an inter- national maritime center for its seaports and ocean- related industries. What To Expect Conference General Chair Professor Lian Lian and Tech- nical Program Chair Professor Wen Xu have led a team of volunteers to develop the show program. The conference honorary co-chairs are Professor Lin Zhongqin, the vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong Univer- sity, and two leaders in the realm of marine science, Profes- sor Jilan Su and Professor Pinxian Wang. In addition, four distinguished professionals will be keynote speakers: Professor Meng Zhou from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dr. Thomas Curtin from University of Washington, Dr. Toshio Yamagata from JAMSTEC, Japan, and Bo Lei from the State Oceanic Administration, China. The four-day event will include presentations, tu- torials, workshops and a student poster com- petition. Multinational speakers and exhibitors will present peer-reviewed material and leading-edge innovations and ideas in more than 83 different sessions. An array of core topics common to all OCEANS con- ferences will be covered, including underwater vehicles, acoustics, remote sensing, marine law and offshore tech- nology. Furthermore, a local organizing committee has se- lected other topics with particular interest to the conference location, including marine re- newable energy, integrated ma- rine science, technology and information, natural disaster prevention and damage reduc- tion, manned and unmanned submersibles for deep-sea ex- ploration, search and rescue at sea, law and policy of the sea, underwater communication and sensing, marine energy and environment in East Asia, ocean engineering and marine robotics. OCEANS'16 Shanghai will be supported by the Ministry of Science & Technology, State Oceanic Administration, Na- tional Natural Science Founda- tion of China and Shanghai Municipal Ocean Bureau. The China Acoustics Institute and Marine Observation Technol- ogy Branch of the Chinese Society for Oceanography serve as co-participating societies. Tutorials and Workshops A series of tutorials and workshops will be held on April 10 to 13. Tutorials are half-day or full-day presentations that are meant to complement the technical program by de- scribing the fundamental elements of a technology and/or rudiments of a subject in a classroom setting. Workshops provide a format for like-minded individuals to spend an ex- tended period of time discussing a topic of mutual interest. ST Conference Preview OCEANS'16 MTS/IEEE Shanghai
