Having been deployed last June, the turbine started delivering limited quantities of power to Ushant in November 2015. Blue Star Ferries Receives Energy Award At the Energy Mastering Awards 2015 event, Blue Star Fer- ries received a Silver Award in the category of Energy Eff- ciency Management - Means of Public Transport, for the plan "Blue Star Ferries Innovative Renewable Energy Sources". The plan involves the pilot implementation and operation of a photovoltaic unit on board a ship. For its execution, Blue Star Ferries has already been cooperating since October 2014 with Eco Marine Power (EMP) and the Japanese company Kei System. This plan is the frst to be executed aboard a ship and opens the path for further development of renewable energy sources in shipping. The results from the pilot application are promising, and the company has already decided to upgrade the system, while also examining the prospect of its expan- sion aboard other ships of the Attica Group. It is estimated that the energy provided will be able to cover part of the ship's needs, resulting in reduced use of electricity generators and lower fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions. BMAPA Sustainable Development Report The British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMA- PA) has published its ninth annual Sustainable Development report covering the year 2014. The new report builds on the sector's sustainable develop- ment strategy, launched in October 2006. Under this initia- tive, individual marine aggregate operators continue to report a wide range of data, which provide a comprehensive record of the sustainable development performance of the sector as a whole. The encouraging signs of economic recovery observed during 2013 were maintained into 2014, with total marine ag- gregate production increasing by 7.6 percent. In London and the southeast of England, where one-third of GB construction activity takes place and where, traditionally, marine supplies provide one-third of all primary construction aggregate de- mand, landings increased by a healthy 13.8 percent. Along the Thames River, marine landings increased by 21 percent. USGS Coastal, Marine Media Portal The USGS has completed the second phase of releasing thousands of photos and videos of the seafoor and coastline through their Coastal and Marine Video and Photography Portal, http://cmgvideo.usgsportals.net. Most of these marine and coastal scenes have never been seen before or mapped at this level of detail. A more accurate perspective of these areas helps coastal managers make important decisions that range from protecting habitats to understanding hazards and managing land use. This portal is the largest database of its kind, providing de- tailed and fne-scale representations of the coast and seafoor. Maps display imagery in the geographic location where the images were recorded. Video and photographs will be continuously added as they are collected.
