66 st / February 2016 www.sea-technology.com Winners Announced for National Student Awards Marine Foundation announced the winners of its 2015 National Student Awards, which are supported by The Crown Estate, Marine Conservation Society and the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST). The overall winner, Alice McNeal, who is studying biological sciences at University of Exeter, was awarded the top prize for her ground- breaking project "Plankton eating plastic: worth worrying about?" and will receive £1,000 to further her re- search. The Marine Conservation So- ciety Wakefeld Memorial Award went to Jack Emmerson, who is studying for a Ph.D. at Bangor University, for his project "Sustainable static-gear fsh- eries in the Irish Sea". The runner-up was Catherine Hinds for her project "Using social media as an untapped resource for a photo-identifcation study of bottlenose dolphins". She is studying marine biology at Queen's University Belfast. HBOI Event Raises Funds for Research The ffth annual "Love Your Lagoon" gala, sponsored by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation (HBOIF), will be supporting graduate student-based research on the Indian River Lagoon conducted at FAU's Har- bor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI). The event will be held February 5 at HBOI in Fort Pierce, Florida. Proceeds from the 2016 event will fund the work of students involved in HBOI's Indian River Lagoon Graduate Research Fellows program. The com- petitive process will result in support for salary, tuition, travel to present research, and/or materials necessary for the re- search project. Fellows will ultimately present their research at the Indian River Lagoon Symposium and at the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Graduate Research Day. In addition, proceeds from the 2016 "Love Your Lagoon" gala will support the ffth annual IRL Symposium, a multi- institutional, multiagency effort to pro- vide a forum for discussing IRL science and its application to management of the lagoon. This year's symposium will be held February 11 and 12 at HBOI. Connection of Tidal Turbine to Onshore Grid A complete MacArtney connectiv- ity solution helped French marine re- newable energy pioneer SABELLA in a cable operation connecting a tidal tur- bine to an onshore grid. The successful operation was carried out in the From- veur Passage, off the island of Ushant, France, and the future outcome of con- necting the two halves will be 15 to 20 percent coverage of Ushant's electricity consumption needs. The Sabella D10 tidal stream turbine project includes two drymate GreenLink connectors, one linked with the turbine and the oth- er connected to the export cable. Sabella has developed an original concept for a screen of tidal turbines being positioned on the seafoor. In ac- cordance with a permit issued by the French government, Sabella plans to keep the D10 tidal turbine submerged for one year to conduct trials. Follow- ing the gradual increase in the speed of the Fromveur Passage currents, Sabella's marine resources
