64 st / February 2016 www.sea-technology.com Low-Emission Concept To Meet Regulations A complete concept for a series of innovative and cost-effective shuttle fer- ries featuring zero or low emissions is being launched by Wärtsilä. The concept has been developed in line with the Norwegian govern- ment's new environmental regulations for ferries emphasizing the elimination of harmful emissions. This trend is also evident in a number of other countries. The design characteristic focuses on high energy effciency with low resis- tance, both above and below the water line. The ferries are designed to run en- tirely on batteries or in a battery-engine hybrid confguration where the fuel options are LNG or biofuel. In plug- in operation, the fuel consumption is reduced by 100 percent compared to conventional installations, and all local emissions are completely eliminated. With the plug-in hybrid confguration, emissions are reduced by up to 50 per- cent. The concept features Wärtsilä's new wireless inductive charging sys- tem, which, for typical shuttle ferry op- erations involving 20,000 or more de- partures a year, is considered a notable beneft because of its time and energy savings. The system eliminates physical cable connections, thus reducing wear and tear and enabling charging to begin immediately when the vessel arrives at quay. The design also encompasses a com- plete electrical and automation pack- age based on the company's battery/ hybrid solution. It includes Wärtsilä azi- muth propulsion units and a complete bridge control system. The ferry series can accommodate 60 to 120 cars on a single car deck for quick and easy load- ing and unloading. New Underwater Centre ROV Training Course The Underwater Centre has added the FMC Schilling TITAN 4 syllabus to its current ROV training suite. The course familiarizes candidates with all major components of the TITAN T4 manipula- tor and provides system operation and routine maintenance procedures. The Centre has adapted the course to offer extensive operational practice. There will be multiple deliveries of the course throughout the year, and it is included in the Centre's seven-week Premium ROV Course. The two-day course will be integrated into the ROV Tooling module and offered as a stand- alone option as well. The FMC Schilling Manipulator was donated to the Centre by Fugro and up- graded by FMC Schilling Robotics from a TITAN 3 to a TITAN 4. Online Tool for Choosing Maritime Security Ship owners and managers now have the chance to choose the most cost-effective private maritime security company (PMSC) to protect their ships via a new online tool at www.marsec manager.info. The online program, Marsec Man- ager, is the brainchild of Bastion Inter- national, a maritime security brokerage company. It enables users to compare different PMSCs in terms of pricing and what they can offer before deciding which security solution is best for them.
