METS is the frst CARB-ap- proved alternative to "plugging in" to shore-side power, also called cold-ironing or alternative maritime power, which is the current standard for meeting California's "Airborne Tox- ic Control Measure for Auxiliary Diesel Engines Operated on Ocean-Going Vessels At-Berth in a California Port" (At- Berth) regulation. Since January 1, 2014, vessel operators not complying with the regulation run the risk of not meet- ing these emissions standards and being hit with signifcant fnes. To meet CARB approval, the METS-1 system under- went rigorous testing. The CARB testing, which began last O ne of the greatest technology challeng- es of our time is powering an ever-expanding global economy while simul- taneously managing the airborne pollutants emit- ted by modern machinery. Around the world, we're asking ourselves and each other: How can we more effciently move our goods? How do we best reach new markets? How will we respond to ever-increasing environmental concerns and regulations? And those of us who live in major port cities are also asking: How do we maintain a healthy community for ourselves and our neighbors? As in other industries, technol- ogy leads change in the shipping business. Clean Air Engineering Maritime and Tri-Mer Corp. have been working on some technical an- swers to some of our industry's critical problems. Our solution is the Maritime Emissions Treatment System (METS), which has been in development at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) for nearly a decade. Its roots go back even further. Tri-Mer Corp., established in 1960, specializes in comprehensive air pollution control solutions, with a focus on advanced pollution control technology combined with turnkey project delivery services. With more than 50 years of experience, Tri-Mer specializes in technology for diffcult applications, such as large-scale diesel. CARB Approval The METS-1 was just recently approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as the frst commercially ready Maritime Emissions Treatment System First Commercially Ready Ship Emissions Capturing System By Nick Tonsich • Rod Gravely The METS-1 was recently approved by the California Air Re- sources Board (CARB) as the frst commercially ready ship emissions capturing system.
