22 st / July 2014 www.sea-technology.com Grant Brown is the vice president for global market- ing at Corvus Energy. He has been connecting people and products for more than 20 years. One of the orig- inal six members of the Corvus Energy management team, Brown's passion is to make the world a better place. This passion, combined with innovative abil- ity to harness the power of modern technology, has helped drive Corvus Energy to the forefront in the new world of sustainable capitalism and increase the bottom line for customers. reducing fuel costs, increasing safety and redundancy, and ultimately making the world a cleaner, better place for fu- ture generations. Forward Movement In just fve years, Corvus Energy has changed an industry. In 2009, when the idea of a hybrid tugboat was brought up, the general consensus was negative. Based on the energy storage technology available at the time, the naysayers had good reason. Today in 2014, the naysayers are much quieter. The technology is being proven every day; not in a laborato- ry but out on working vessels, oil rigs and in ports. The com- panies who have chosen to adopt a hybrid approach now have a competitive advantage of fuel savings of between 15 and 35 percent, maintenance reductions in the same range, and can offer a "green solution" to their customers. These forward thinking companies are driving the change and, while the decision to go hybrid is not always easy, it can make very good fnancial sense. The fact that the air we all breathe is a little bit cleaner is a very nice added beneft. n tion with the Siemens and Kongsberg systems only took six weeks, from delivery of the batteries to sea trials; a huge achievement. The ESS for the ship is set primarily to maintain idle or station-keeping positions while avoiding diesel engines run- ning at nonoptimal load. This enables battery-only operation for entry and exit within the harbor and allows the vessel to meet strict harbor emission requirements. The load-leveling function keeps a high level of fuel effciency and reduces the number of generating sets, enabling the ferry to optimize its fuel consumption by adjusting its engine output. Thus, the ferry is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 15 percent. "Scandlines is making a signifcant investment in new green technology that will beneft the people in the areas adjacent to the harbor and beyond in terms of reduced pol- lution," said Fini Hansen, technical superintendent of feet management for Scandlines. "Corvus batteries are used pri- marily to minimize diesel engines running at nonoptimal load. Further, this means load-leveling function in order to keep a high level of fuel effciency and reduced number of generating sets in service." Due to the signifcant reduction in fuel consumption and positive experiences with the hybrid propulsion system, the three remaining passenger ferries on the route—MV Deutschland, MV Schleswig-Holstein and MV Prins Rich- ard, are currently being converted to hybrid propulsion us- ing a similar confguration of Corvus Energy systems. The Corvus Energy ESS, in conjunction with the components and engineering capabilities of integration partner Siemens, provides Scandlines with a new competitive advantage by www.sercel.com ANYWHERE.
