This was part of Bluefn's latest development program to demonstrate the technology as an integrated option for its customers. The success of the trials has re- sulted in an ongoing relation- ship between Sonardyne and Bluefn Robotics for future Solstice integration. The Future of Side Scan With the development of the Solstice side scan sonar, Sonardyne has produced a cost-effective sensor that deliv- ers class-leading imagery across a vast range of AUV plat- forms and is suitable for a broad range of industries and applications. The advanced imaging technology, low-power consumption, simple mechanical integration and ability to overlay integrated bathymetry dramatically enhance the ca- pabilities of small, medium and large AUVs. With multiple Solstice systems now being integrated into a number of dif- ferent customer platforms, including AUVs and swimmer delivery vehicles, the future of side scan is here to stay. n Nick Swift is a qualifed business development manager, with extensive expe- rience across the defense and energy markets and a master of business ad- ministration degree. Prior to becoming head of the maritime security division at Sonardyne in 2012, he held commercial responsibility for the company's geophysical products and markets. is available in 1,500-meter and 200-meter depth-rated models, each with the ability to integrate fexible payload arrangements based on individual mission re- quirements. Comprehensive testing over the last three years at Sonar- dyne's trials and testing facility in Plymouth, England, preceded the Bluefn integration. Sound Surveyor, one of Sonardyne's trials and training vessels, was ftted with a real-time demonstration system and went on to showcase real-world Solstice performance. It was so suc- cessful that several clients have rewritten their CONOPS (concept of operations) around the technology's capabili- ties. Further trials were then conducted in February 2014 from Bluefn Robotics' headquarters, where a Bluefn-12 AUV integrated with the Solstice side scan sonar was deployed from Bluefn's vessel, the RV Resolution, to conduct short missions around the Boston Harbor area in approximately 15 meters of water. Each mission consisted of legs of 500 meters, during which the AUV few in a pattern commonly known as mowing the lawn. This is where the vehicle makes a pass over one area and then comes right back alongside it, running in parallel lines that will overlap and cover the entire bottom to form an image of the seafoor.
