1983 - 1986 As Sea Technology magazine celebrates its 50th year, we take a look back at major events in the oceanographic industry and the world. 1983 Legislation was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives to create a National Ocean Policy Commission. Weicker, Jr. - Compass Distinguished Achievement Award • Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Compass Industrial Award • Dr. A.R. Bayoumi, Egypt; Admiral Yohay Ben Nun, Israel - Compass International Award • Marine Board, National Academy of Engineering - National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) Safety in Seas Award 1984 The National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges was formed. Philip J. Burguieres of Cameron Iron Works Inc. was elected chairman of the board of directors of NOIA. Sea Technology profled the third administrator of NOAA, Dr. John V. Byrne.
