ST Conference Preview Ocean Business 2013 O cean Business 2013 will be held from April 9 to 11 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England. Recognized as one of the most important events in the ocean technology calendar, the biennial event is expected to attract its largest attendance yet���more than 4,000 visitors from 50 countries. Ocean Business is free to attend. International Exhibition Ocean Business will host a three-day exhibition of more than 300 manufacturers and service providers in the industry. The exhibition center is located on the waterfront at the National Oceanography Centre, enabling visitors to see the latest technology in action on board vessels at the dockside. Hands-On Training and Demonstrations Ocean Business is a hands-on learning show with free training and demonstrations. Running more than 180 hours, sessions include demonstrations on vessels or at the dockside, in test tanks or in seminar rooms. Visitors can test out equipment before purchasing or learn about the latest technologies and techniques. Individuals wishing to participate can apply directly to the individual company, which has a limited number of tickets, in advance of the show or sign up on site. Offshore Survey Conference Running alongside is Offshore Survey, a two-day conference focusing on the latest technologies and business issues facing the offshore industry. The conference will appeal to those interested in offshore surveying, subsea positioning, data processing and visualization, as well as general business and industry issues. Associated Industry Events This year, the organizers have sensed great positivity towards Ocean Business from the marine industry. Director of Ocean Business Versha Carter said, ���We feel like the industry itself is putting Ocean Business at the center of the ocean technology community. People are coming to us and asking if they can run their own events at Ocean Business because it���s such an important forum for business. We are thrilled that the show has such signifcance.��� Several organizations will be holding their annual events at the conference. The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) will jointly run a workshop aimed at setting a forward-looking strategy for the blue economy. The Challenger Society is organizing a workshop about the latest developments in microfuidics and sensor technology, and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) will be showcasing its technology solutions, with the aim of developing commercial partnerships for products. The National Oceanography Centre will be holding an event dedicated to the commercial exploitation of research. The Canadian High Commission will be hosting sessions about business, and research and development opportunities for international companies in Canada, and the Society of Maritime Industries and the Hydrographic Society are also arranging events to dovetail with the show. Ocean Careers For attendees who are newly qualifed or seeking work, the Ocean Careers event can offer direction and inspiration for a career path in this sector. Ocean Careers will run throughout the conference to provide recruitment and career advice. Networking Events As well as all the associated events, social activities have also been planned to provide an opportunity for networking. These include a drinks reception, a sponsored wine trail and a gala dinner.
